I watched “Ensemble c’est tout” and I have to say it’s such a lovely film. I think I could watch it a number of times. “Transsiberian” made me want to have my Emily site finished right away… And “Barfuss” must be the loveliest, cutest and most romantic - yet never “kitschy” - film I’ve seen in a long time. Plus it made me bawl my eyes out.
Then “Confessions of a Shopaholic”. Isla Fisher is great and Hugh Dancy (with what little he got to do) too. The whole film is just overly pink though IMO. For a movie marketed at women rather than girls (at least I think so) a bit less would have been ok. Whenever Rebecca was overly fascinated with shops etc I kept thinking how I couldn’t relate to that at all. Only later I realized I am just about the same when it comes to rare pictures & magazines of my favourite actresses - or just pics I don’t have yet. I HAVE to have them lol For the time being I want to focus on adding all the exciting stuff I own on the sites before heading off gathering more and more - so much for my self-set goal at the moment.
Oh, and I did buy 4 DVDs (at reduced price though) over lunch - any relation to my annoyance with my current car troubles?!
Exhausted

I’m definitely exhausted from upgrading 7 Coppermine Galleries with the latest script. 4 of them also needed the new Stramm Mod. Usually I try to do one each day or so, but lately I’ve been very good at procrastinating online stuff so I did it all in a row. Seems like a huge waste of time but ever since having had my whole hosting account infected due to one un-upgraded Coppermine installation I really try to take the upgrades seriously…
Watched Cranford earlier this week. I really enjoyed it, just a shame Mr. Holbrook died as suddenly. Now, that was a storyline I would simply have loved to see more developed.
Also updated the Radio Blog in the sidebar. Don’t know why I added those Il Divo tracks in the first place… Deleted those and a few others but added 4 new songs ![]()
Oscar Nominations

Nominations for the upcoming 81st Academy Awards are out! First feeling: I’m totally happy for Kate’s nomination as Best Actress in The Reader (makes definitely up for not receiving one in Revolutionary Road) but sad that Leonardo didn’t get nominated and also that Revolutionary Road is quite absent from the main categories. I thought that was a perfect (though depressing) film…
Leading Actor: I feel embarassed that I don’t know who Richard Jenkins is.
Supporting Actor: Heath should win this. Yay for Michael Shannon’s nomination.
Leading Actress: Sad that Sally Hawkins didn’t make it, but it’s been one of the better years for women’s roles. But Kate’s in and that’s all I wanted!
Supporting Actress: Lovely Amy Adams!
Make Up: Wondering why The Reader is absent?!
Original Screenplay: Yay, there’s Happy-Go-Lucky
Slumdog Millionaire Yay! 10 nominations. I’m all for SM to win! Even though I think the fact that is doing so well makes people try & belittle it. But I don’t care, I think this is one of the rare cases when everything comes together: great cinematography, editing, soundtrack, acting as well as a moving story as well as some serious topics. I hated the review in a local newspaper recently where they put the film’s success on depicting the American Dream, and that sometimes films get awarded because of a feeling they convey no matter if they’re good or bad. And that review was next to one for Changeling (which I haven’t seen and I’m not saying it’s bad, mind you) where they couldn’t lay enough praise on the film and say it was most deserving of an oscar.
Benjamin Button: 13 nominations for arguably the most beautiful and epic movie of the year. However, at times I’m afraid I looked on my watch because I couldn’t get as involved with the characters as I should have.
All in all, exciting Oscar nominations!
True

Just finished watching Happy-Go-Lucky. What an amazing film! I can’t think of anything that could have been made better. Sally Hawkins is great - I knew that before of course, but she really really shines in this one. Eddie Marsan was already kind of stealing the show in Little Dorrit and here he’s again delivering an excellent performance. I’ll definitely have to watch out for The 39 Steps, esp. as it’s also got Rupert Penry-Jones. Back to HGL, Alexis Zegerman and Stanley Townsend (isn’t he gorgeous as well?!) also deserve praise - and basically everyone involved plays perfectly. Kudos to Mike Leigh for getting so many true performances out of everyone and showing us a film with no false note in it!
Same goes for Revolutionary Road actually. Never had I seen a film as depressing and with as intense fighting scenes that didn’t have false notes in it before. But now I have. Every line that was delivered, whether murmured (there you go Stef lol), shouted or whatever, always rang true. Leonardo DiCaprio has never been better (though he was almost as brilliant in The Departed which I’ve only just seen and it’s been a while since I’ve seen his other great roles so I just might have to re-watch Blood Diamond in which he had blown me away at the time) especially because the role is such a complex one and he adds even more complexity through his acting. I just can’t get over how well he was in the final fighting scene. Both angry and sad. Kate Winslet’s always great. Us being used to that might deter from the fact that she’s absolutely fantastic here. Just consider what she accomplishes, she’s playing a character that might not evoke much sympathy. A character we don’t know that much about, as with Frank the dialogue doesn’t say it all. Kate really fleshes out her character with non verbal acting. She does evoke (some) sympathy and I feel I totally understand her character and her motives.
Sadly, a lot of IMDb users have decided to hate both films. I really should stop frequenting these messageboards. The amount of people who actually seem to have understood the movie they had gone to see - even if they disliked it, which they’re of course allowed to - is appallingly small….
Though I’d be more than happy if all that Oscar talk turns out to be true for Sally Hawkins I’m still rooting for Kate. This will be her year, I hope!
Tri orísky pro Popelku

Apparently that’s the original title of my favourite winter movie - also known as Three Wishes for Cinderella. This is just an unbelievably gorgeous film. Every single time I watch it I fall head over heels in love with it again! Of course I have a German dubbed version and I think it works nevertheless. I remember it took me a while before I figured out it wasn’t original audio. Found it in Czech yesterday and downloaded it. Usually, I’m always all for original audio no matter what the language (given that it has subtitles) but in this case, I don’t know. Maybe I’ve just seen it one time too many in German but I found the Czech language seriously distracting. It was still nice though and I got used to it. But then, there it was, the first scene of Cinderella galopping across the scenery, I was already looking forward to hearing that lovely dreamy music, but then, oh my! in the original there are lyrics! In Czech! Not nearly as nice as the music I’m used to. Even bought the soundtrack a few years back. I think I’ll burn the Czech version on a CD just in case I like to watch it again sometimes but my feeling is I’ll be sticking to the German version!
Haven’t done as much for my sites as I had planned to but that’s ok. At least the group podcast for the Sophia site went over well. It was quite the experience! In the end I edited the whole thing to 38 minutes (it was 72 to begin with), we had lots of technical difficulties lol
I washed my car yesterday. I felt so proud - one of those things I rarely muster up motivation to do - until I realized that the temperature was below 0° C which caused the whole car to be covered in ice. So I had to scratch the windows before I could drive back home again.
People have been wanting to invite me or include me in their excursions today. But I only felt like going back home and continue watching movie after movie. So I had some lame excuses and a narrow escape. And anyway, I’m the one who’ll have to go to work tomorrow and face my crazy boss and do all the last minute work.
p.s. The 1973 Czech Cinderella movie counts as period drama, right? Not that there’s any indication as to when it’s set but it’s definitely not in the present time. I will be able to make caps for Fragment of Light ![]()
