Just Like War

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007 | Random | 4 Comments

Boy am I glad did I choose to not go to the city center on Saturday! It was just like war! Innocent bypassers got stones and bottles thrown at them! And the riots made yesterday’s cover of the New York Times! What is happening next?!

Never do today what you can postpone and do tomorrow

Or is it “Don’t postpone to tomorrow, what you can do today”? I really hope I’ll manage to go & see Hallam Foe on the big screen soon! The previous Sunday (Sep 16) I couldn’t be bothered to get up & dressed to make it to the special lunch screening. This Saturday (Sep 22) I would have had to hurry to make it to the 2.30pm screening - I (again) couldn’t be bothered, esp. with lots and lots and lots of free time coming up on Sunday. Or so I thought…. until I got the call. My parents - currently on vacation - had forgotten some very important stuff they just couldn’t do without… And so, little me drove some 230 kilometres to help them out. Actually, I really enjoyed it. I’ve never driven [a car myself] that long a distance before (not to mention doing it [completely] on my own and to another country) and the weather was really nice. After spending a lovely late-afternoon and evening with them I was too tired to drive back. So, I decided to spend the night. I went to bed at 8.30pm - and got up at 4.45 am. Wow! That means I’ll be up for 7 hours soon - and it’s not even lunch break yet. After changing cars (to help out my dad’s employee I’m sharing the car with - though I don’t know what he’s done to make him deserving of my extra efforts lol) & stopping at home to get my brother’s contact lenses (he’s on vacation in another part of the country and needs me to send them to him via Priority Mail later today - of course I could have driven the total of 6hours to him & back home but enough is enough…) - this took an additional 45 minutes - I got to the office on time. Well, almost. It was 8.03am - 3 minutes late. (I really would have preferred going straight to the office…. I could have left earlier in the evening today and on all the next days - or of course I could have slept a bit longer this morning)

So much excitement - and I still haven’t seen Hallam Foe. I suppose I’ll have to go to the 8.30pm screening tomorrow - I don’t see any other free time coming up all week (of course this is also the week I’m working full-time because my boss is on vacation) - and the film might not have as good screening times when the new programme launches - and I’ll go on a short trip anyway next weekend.

p.s. I’m anxious to see how Wordpress 2.3 behaves - in relation with my favourite plugins…..

Couldn’t think of a title for this blog entry… Oh, and I must list 2 more additions to my previous post: Jeremy Northam (too bad he’s constantly playing the bad guy) and Jason Statham (awww, that voice. Guilty Pleasure).

Also I must say the film Enchanted seems like good fun. Other than that I’m convinced that my recent illness (I had a cold and was extremly tired + feeling dizzy for 4 consecutive days) was partly due to my very bad sleeping habits and am resolved to better myself. So far, I’ve been keeping up quite well and I hope to continue in that way. Of course, this will have an impact on my websites - I will no longer stay up past midnight just to update them! I’m putting this resolution up here so I’ll be feeling more bound to keep it.

My new favourite song

I’m listening to it all the time. Just because Marion was lipsynching in La Vie en Rose doesn’t mean she can’t sing. As this song proves!

Too much pride?

Often I think the Swiss are too proud for their own good! If anything that has Switzerland attached to it wins or succeeds ‘we’ are the best. Today’s headline: We remain a ‘power of the ocean’! What are we, the new British Empire or what? Ok, so apparently this year’s America’s Cup final was exciting - I didn’t watch - but does the win of one team make a whole nation great? And by the way, the team isn’t actually Swiss, it is only tagged Swiss because of the owner - who isn’t exactly what I’d call ‘homegrown’.

Bertarelli was the only Swiss aboard the winning boat. Born in Italy, the biotech billionaire with an MBA from Harvard he put together a winning team made up of six Kiwis, three Americans, two Italians, and one each from Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, and Spain.

Bertarelli’s formula was to set up a smooth, corporate-style team drawing on the world’s best talent. Bertarelli even compared the team to the nation of Switzerland, in the center of Europe.

“We had to be open to other cultures,” he said. “We grow bigger through diversity.”

Hah! If only people would take the same view of other cultures when it actually comes to living with them in everyday life!

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind people that aren’t truly Swiss being successful for Swiss teams - but I DO mind the media and the average citizen getting all puffed up because of that - claiming the success for the nation (who didn’t do anything) and by doing so taking away the merit of the actual achievers.
