Hating series
Thursday, November 23rd, 2006 | Book | No Comments
I’m the first to admit that upon finishing a good book I’d love to have a continuation of the story. However, in reality they’re often disappointing because there’s only so much plot to a story until it becomes forced. What I hate is that at the moment all the promising stories turn out to be part of a series. I don’t want to buy all of these books, once read they’re just in the way. And libraries are often missing one book. Also it seems that the writers fill the pages with endless descriptions of rooms, clothes, hairdos, etc or get lost in background stories for the characters. Seems to me a profit-making business: stretching out a story over as many books as possible.
Then there’s of course the authors who are doing the endless descriptions thing in a normal novel. Just read one by Josephine Cox. I bore all of those and the almost pathetic descritpions of the most heartfelt love ever only to find out at the end of the quite long novel that there was no happy-end. Surely, I deserved at least that in this case?! Good quality writing as well as gripping stories sure do come along seldom.
Cover Albums

I’ve bought 2 new CDs. Both are cover albums. But I’m absolutely loving them. I’ve fallen in love with Laura Pausini’s voice all over again. And Westlife sure have a good singing voice. I’m not having anyone speak against them just for having been a boyband. On this album they’re back at their best - simple love ballads. Though the beauty of the 4 voices and accompanying instruments makes me forget the simplicity of it all. The duet with Delta Goodrem is a treat since a new album by her is nowhere in sight.
Talk about contrasts

The new Bond film had its premiere in Zurich, Switzerland. Oh my god, international stars like Daniel Craig, Catelina Moreno, director Martin Campbell, Tina Turner together with the best of Switzerland’s prominence (beauty pageants, athletes and singers) lining up on a proper red carpet: this is newsworthy, enough to put it on the front page of today’s commuter newspaper, and on page 2 and also add a 6-page special.
Surely, the young new bride of Bond-director Martin Campbell (61) Sol Romero (23) has to be shown as well. After all she’s a local (if having a Swiss mother and spending holidays if Switzerland makes you a local) and she sure does look stunning all dressed up for the premiere. As she did in London! However, try find a picture of her on wireimage or the like and you’ll have a hard time. So much for being noticed… Also the more serious newspapers have the event on the cover and in the PEOPLE section. It has a picture of Sol Romero kissing Martin Campell (it looks rather pathetic) and says that she repeatedly kissed him demonstratively. After all she has to prove she’s in love and didn’t marry him just for career and prestige reasons…. (Galleries: 1, 2) A little bit of trivia: Though I’ve never met her personally, I have some connection to her. My brother-in-law’s family used to be ‘friends’ with hers. And my sister met her once.
And on page 2, what does it say beneath the picture of last night’s glamourous event: little baby boy found on the street between 2 cars, seriously wounded. And on top of the cover picture on the other newspaper: Another story of youngsters (in this case a group of 13 guys who are 15-18 years old) raping & abusing a girl (a 13-year-old) Over the past few weeks there have been lots and lots of stories like this, sometimes the kids involved were much younger (5-8 years old). Talk about contrasts…
Scanning madness
Monday, November 13th, 2006 | Celebrity, Sites | No Comments
Over the past 2 weeks I’ve either bought or received by mail (from ebay) 17 (!) magazines. And I still had some magazines and clippings from before that needed scanning. Over the weekend I’ve now finished scanning everything that I had promised to scan for others. And I started on my own stuff. All in all about 5 hours. And there’s still a lot more! Welcome to the scanning madness….
Upgrading

How I hate upgrading Coppermine with the latest release. That’s really something they should make easier. It’s especially tiresome if there are multiple galleries that each need upgrading….
