Zurich

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

I can’t believe I didn’t check out the programme of this year’s Zurich Film Festival before! I’ve never been before and its Promo Trailer rather put me off in general - isn’t it pretentious?!

However, Blue State, Anna Paquin’s latest movie which definitely won’t be seeing wide release anywhere soon, is being shown!! There are 5 screenings next week - but it looks like I won’t be able to make it to any of them :( It’s a shame I don’t live in Zurich itself… Who knows how many years I’ll have to wait to finally see this now…

Late Bloomers

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

After France (Persepolis), Germany (Auf der anderen Seite) and Turkey (Takva) - and others which I don’t know about, I’m sure - another country has revealed their submission for an Oscar as Best Foreign Language Film. Switzerland’s choice is Die Herbstzeitlosen (Late Bloomers). A very good choice if I may say so! I enjoyed it very much and the writing & acting is superb. I wish the film the best of luck!

I have finally seen Hallam Foe!!! I was not disappointed! I’m not sure whether I’ll ever go to an evening screening on my own again. I don’t mind going alone at the less popular times, but I felt weird going alone when all the others were their with friends. Except for some middle-aged men - who obviously sat on both sides of my seat… I can’t believe this was the first time I saw Sophia Myles on the big screen - even though I’ve seen all her other projects - except Prince & Pauper, Heartbeat guest appearance and a small film made for Channel 4’s Dogma TV - on DVD.

This is without a doubt Sophia’s best work to date. Obviously I’m biased, but still. The role gives her the opportunity to really shine, to show the world what a versatile actress she is. Sophia Myles looks absolutely beautiful and ethereal but conveys the various aspects of Kate’s sometimes flawed character perfectly. Sometimes it’s just in the tone of her voice, in the way she pauses between two words or in a glance. Kate could easily have become a one-dimensional character but Sophia brings her to life and makes her a normal and most of all real person.

I love director David Mackenzie’s quote about her:

I hope that this film will help to change people’s perception of Sophia. She has a real movie-star face, like Ingrid Bergman. She’s a throwback to that Forties glamour, but she’s grittier and more approachable than a Hitchcock blonde ice-queen. I think people have mistakenly typecast her as a posh bird in the past, but this film should go some way toward demolishing that impression.

Here my comment I’ve come up with for my site on the film in general: What could have easily become a very dark and depressing film turns out to be really entertaining, heart-warming and funny even. I think the term ‘gothic-lite’ that one review used describes the film’s atmosphere very well. It is credit to Jamie Bell’s performance that we come to love Hallam with all his oddities and feel with him. He also has great chemistry with Sophia and I felt the relationship between an older woman and younger guy was portrayed very well. All the characters feel real and although there is plenty of drama in the film there are many moments that simply evoked a grin or even a laughter from me. For example, how Jamie as Hallam stops Alisdair from revealing his secrets is priceless. Additionally, the use of music and visual elements was used really well to create cineastic art. It also made me want to visit Edinburgh, the city is a character of its own and the skyline is featured throughout the film. And I think the ending tied the film up nicely – without becoming a traditional happy end, though. I am glad I was able to catch it on the big screen – where I’m sure it looks best – and recommend that everyone watches it. This is a film not to miss.

Oh, and isn’t the post’s title a great quote? It’s one of Sophia’s character’s lines in the film.

Never do today what you can postpone and do tomorrow

Monday, September 24th, 2007

Or is it “Don’t postpone to tomorrow, what you can do today”? I really hope I’ll manage to go & see Hallam Foe on the big screen soon! The previous Sunday (Sep 16) I couldn’t be bothered to get up & dressed to make it to the special lunch screening. This Saturday (Sep 22) I would have had to hurry to make it to the 2.30pm screening - I (again) couldn’t be bothered, esp. with lots and lots and lots of free time coming up on Sunday. Or so I thought…. until I got the call. My parents - currently on vacation - had forgotten some very important stuff they just couldn’t do without… And so, little me drove some 230 kilometres to help them out. Actually, I really enjoyed it. I’ve never driven [a car myself] that long a distance before (not to mention doing it [completely] on my own and to another country) and the weather was really nice. After spending a lovely late-afternoon and evening with them I was too tired to drive back. So, I decided to spend the night. I went to bed at 8.30pm - and got up at 4.45 am. Wow! That means I’ll be up for 7 hours soon - and it’s not even lunch break yet. After changing cars (to help out my dad’s employee I’m sharing the car with - though I don’t know what he’s done to make him deserving of my extra efforts lol) & stopping at home to get my brother’s contact lenses (he’s on vacation in another part of the country and needs me to send them to him via Priority Mail later today - of course I could have driven the total of 6hours to him & back home but enough is enough…) - this took an additional 45 minutes - I got to the office on time. Well, almost. It was 8.03am - 3 minutes late. (I really would have preferred going straight to the office…. I could have left earlier in the evening today and on all the next days - or of course I could have slept a bit longer this morning)

So much excitement - and I still haven’t seen Hallam Foe. I suppose I’ll have to go to the 8.30pm screening tomorrow - I don’t see any other free time coming up all week (of course this is also the week I’m working full-time because my boss is on vacation) - and the film might not have as good screening times when the new programme launches - and I’ll go on a short trip anyway next weekend.

p.s. I’m anxious to see how Wordpress 2.3 behaves - in relation with my favourite plugins…..

Becoming Jane

Monday, September 17th, 2007

So, I’ve finally seen Becoming Jane. What can I say? I think it’s good I’ve had to wait such a long time since I first was impatient to see it. I was so ready to fall in love with this film I would have only been disappointed, I guess. Now, my anticipation was on an average level and I think I appreciated the film more because of that. All in all it was a lovely film. Many of the good ingredients there, Anne as adorable as ever, James obviously absolutely great and Anna Maxwell Martin once again surprising me with her charm and talent. But somehow lovely is all the film is - I have so not fallen in love with it. But oh well, I’m happy nontheless. In time I will be sure to re-watch every other few months, I’m sure, it is a charming film after all.

Surprisingly, none of the scenes in the 2nd half really moved me (the ones that are without a doubt supposed to be the main elements of the drama). It was only the very last scene that stirred something in me. Even though in context with the whole film it certainly is forced (to have some kind of happy end?) it is so well-done and so movingly bitter sweet I couldn’t help absolutely loving it :)
