Mamma Mia!

Sunday, August 31st, 2008 | Book, Film | No Comments

I can’t believe I haven’t yet posted about Mamma Mia! Over a week ago now I’ve finally found the time to go see it in the cinema. Wow! I felt just like after having seen the musical, simply amazed. I have never laughed so much during a movie while watching it in the cinema nor can I remember the last time a movie lifted my spirits as much! Will definitely be buying the DVD when it comes out!!!

Been reading quite a number of novels recently. Guess I should update the 100 books page… Nothing too spectacular. Most recently, I’ve read the circle trilogy by Nora Roberts. What can I say? The more serious my real life gets, like the more I actually am doing all that I plan to do, the more I need to have some “cheap” entertainment haha. Anyway, the 3rd book is definitely my favourite. Just quickly, the books are about a circle of 6 people who have to fight evil to keep all existing worlds from going under. The sorcerer who needs to find “the witch, the warrior, the scholar, the one of many forms, and the one you’ve lost” - against vampires. Not surprisingly, each book tells the story of a beginning romance - so that in the end the 6 people from the circle are also 3 couples very much in love. Ah, back to the 3rd book. I just love when “dark” men fall in love with “innocent” women. Especially if it’s told in the right way, which it was IMO in this instance. And I liked how Moira wasn’t that innocent after all. Blah, blah, blah. I can just hear my mom saying how unhealthy it is to read romance novels now. And I guess she’s right. But at least once again I had a really good time reading them.

Apparently, ages ago I had put The Thorn Birds on my rental queue. The first DVD with parts 1&2 has arrived now. However, after having watched part 1 I can’t say I’m exactly looking forward to watching the rest. There’s so much I kind of dislike about some of the story elements and the way the series was filmed. I’m just so not a fan of period dramas filmed in the 80s. Anyone seen the whole piece?

No stars?!

Not sure anyone is interested in hearing anything more about Locarno…. But right now I’m really pissed at the Swiss media. Everyone just keeps saying how no stars came to the Locarno Film Festival. No stars?! Sure, no huge stars, but doesn’t Sophia Myles count? At least her series is currently on TV every Monday here. Also, they were so disappointed that Anjelica Huston wasn’t going to come. Why not exploit the fact then that her nephew came?! But not a single mention of them in reports about the festival - not even a photograph or the like. Phew! Instead of constantly moaning the absence of HUGE stars appreciate the ones that came I say!

Oh yes, about Jack Huston. Outlander wasn’t the first thing I’ve seen him in. I remember now. He was also in Miss Austen Regrets as the yummy London doctor.

What do you think about my new theme? I just love how you can find a WP theme you like and download & install within a matter of seconds hehe

Surreal Festival experience

Locarno was a blast! After Thursday’s telephone call to make some final arrangements I was already confident it’d be an amazing experience. So we left and drove for 3.5 hours - mostly in the rain - and arrived at the beautiful lake city. Thankfully the weather had cleared up by then and we walked around town. I was desperately trying not to look pathetic in my new high heels. After a while I did get the hang of it and within a short while it was time to make another telephone call to see how the situation was and when it’d be possible to see Sophia. Only 5 minutes later we found ourselves in a wonderfully surreal surrounding and yet it felt like the most normal thing in the world. The film was good - I mean, good considering it’s a monster/period/action film - and also the getting-drinks-afterwards part was fun. It was around 1am when we got back in our car to drive home. We were glad that traffic was smooth (I’d have been surprised to find it otherwise at that hour) and that rain wasn’t that big a problem anymore. After only 2.5 hours we were back home. I desperately tried to stay awake to entertain my brother who was driving but half an hour before we reached home it was useless. I still tried talking but fell asleep mid-sentence. Uploaded some pics etc to the site and went to sleep. I felt groggy for the whole weekend however. I’m guessing I’m too old for staying up all night lol

It was funny to see fans approach Sophia and Jack and ask for photographs. They were both incredibly approachable and kind. Not even the guy who wanted to kiss Sophia on both cheeks could throw her off balance - only almost.

I regret not having taken pictures of Jack Huston - I’m sure he’ll be big any time soon - and the brains behind the film, Dirk and Howard. Dirk was very nice and kind. Spoke a few sentences together throughout the evening, he even took 2 pictures with my camera :) And apparently, Howard has been to my Sophia site many times. I’m flattered - honestly! And why on earth was I being as complicated when it came to photograph/film the gang on stage?! Sure, still standing at the entrance (which was very much on the side of the stage instead of in front of it) waiting to be allowed to our (fantastic!) seats as well as carrying jackets and what not made it difficult. But still I’m convinced I should have been able to get some decent footage of the introduction. Anyway, the evening was so fantastic and special otherwise I shall stop worrying about this.

Got my ticket - which as it turned out I wouldn’t have had to buy - signed by Sophia, Jack, Dirk and Howard. I shall treasure it!

Only hours after we drove through the Gotthard tunnel a huge car accident happened. 17 cars crashed into each other and the tunnel was blocked for several hours. Thinking of this I still can’t quite believe our luck and that everything went fine when we were driving!

I had a friend of mine staying with me over the weekend - the main reason why we had to drive back during the night - and already the whole Locarno experience starts feeling like a dream.

And totally random: I HATE how the ‘Miscellanous Links’ section at the IMDb has become like a paid directory. The lists are almost useless now. The links to really good websites featuring actual content are totally lost among all the ’spam’ links - at least they always tend to be at the end of the list so I know where to look…

Upcoming TV

I guess trying to catch Moonlight every week back when it was on drew me into the TV zone. I’m living outside of the US so this is kind of not the most obvious thing to do - follow the US TV season. Anyway, while I was not actively trying to find out what will be coming up in the new season I already know of a series I probably will have to follow: True Blood. How can I not watch when there’s Anna Paquin?! Plus the pilot was kind of intriguing. And I can’t wait to see the new series of Bones! I love that show so much!!

Then, re-watching Sense & Sensibility (2008) as well as Bleak House stirred up anticipation for other upcoming BBC productions that will air this coming Fall/Winter: Little Dorrit (Matthew Macfadyen anyone?), Lark Rise to Candleford, Season 2, Tess, Robin Hood, Season 3. And of course I am dying to see the Doctor Who specials that will help survive the absence of a new series next year.

And now there’s a purity inside of me

Not felt much like blogging lately. A lot of the sites need updating. Hope to muster up the motivation. Been watching loads of Talk Show interviews on YouTube lately (Julia Roberts, Liv Tyler, Jonathan Rhys Meyers). New series on my download list: Robin Hood. Oh, and did I tell you I fell in love with the little film gem August Rush. Yes, it’s unreal and not that credible but it’s so enchanting I just couldn’t help myself. And I LOVE the music and am listening to the soundtrack all the time now.

Best news: Sophia Myles told me she’s going to be at the world premiere of Outlander. Nothing special as such, right? I mean a film’s star is kind of expected to attend its world premiere. But what if that event is not taking place in Hollywood but in a small European country? Granted, it’s a (rather) respected film festival but still. I’m more than happy that Sophia will attend the 61st Film Festival Locarno. I bought myself tickets and am so gonna be there!

The neon lights in bars
And headlights from the cars
Have started a symphony
Surrounding Me
The things I left behind
Have melted in my mind
And now there’s a purity
Inside of me

I’ve been sitting watching life pass from the sidelines
Been waiting for a dream to seep in through my blinds
I wondered what might happen if I left this all behind
Would the wind be at my back ? Could I get you off my mind
This time
August Rush - This Time (by Jonathan Rhys Meyers)
